Police officers keeping an eye on pedestrians and traffic nabbed a man who had just robbed a gas station at gunpoint Wednesday night, police said.
At about 10:45 p.m., a man pulled out a gun and robbed the First Fuel at 575 Main St.
His bounty — about $216 and the cash register drawer.
Officers assigned to a new anti-crime unit saw the suspect run from the store and up a flight of stairs that connects Main Street to Vine Street.
The officers went to Vine Street and stopped the man, who was detained and positively identified as the robbery suspect.
Police also recovered the cash, a BB gun and the drawer.
Police arrested Dennis Hazard, 19, of Derby Avenue, Derby.
He is charged with first-degree robbery, sixth-degree larceny, second-degree breach of peace and first-degree reckless endangerment.
He was being held on a $150,000 bond pending a Dec. 24 arraignment.
The anti-crime unit bolsters regular patrols in Ansonia. The city is paying for the program through a federal grant.
