ANSONIA — Police said they have obtained an arrest warrant for a 17-year-old male in connection to a fatal shooting on Hubbell Avenue on April 5.
The teen suspect, who is from Ansonia, is currently in law enforcement custody in North Carolina, and has been since May 13, according to a prepared statement issued by Ansonia police on May 17.
The suspect’s name has not been released, but police said he was captured with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, Connecticut division, along with U.S. Marshals in North Carolina.
Ansonia police are working to extradite the teen to Connecticut, where he will be charged with felony murder, murder, and robbery. Police said the suspect’s name will be released once the criminal case is transferred to adult court. The teen will first be arraigned in juvenile court, police said.
According to police, the victim, Johnny Class, 20, of Stratford, was a passenger in a Honda Civic on Hubbell Avenue at about 1 p.m. April 5 when a person fired into the car at close range, striking Class.
Police said the shooting happened “during an attempted drug purchase.” They have not elaborated.
The Honda’s driver took off after the gunfire, and stopped on Main Street at the intersection of Kingston Drive to call for help. Class was not conscious when medics unloaded him from the front passenger’s seat and onto a stretcher.
Police did not say how the teen was developed as a suspect in the shooting. However, they said the teen suspect fled Connecticut shortly after the shooting. Police did not reveal how they tracked the teen to North Carolina.
“The investigation is still ongoing and additional arrests are anticipated,” Lt. Patrick Lynch said. Police did not say how many additional suspects they are investigating.
