Ansonia officials this year will host a second bike festival in honor of Pierre Lallement, a former Ansonia resident who received the first patent for the pedaled bicycle.
The second-annual “Pierre Lallement Festival of Bikes” will be held in Ansonia on June 3.
The event is co-hosted by the Ansonia Cultural Commission and the Economic Development Commission.
The event will feature music, entertainment, BMX and skate exhibition, bike and helmet safety tips, and more.
The group is posting more details on its Facebook page as they organize the event.
Lallement is credited with receiving the first patent for a “velocipede” in 1866. The invention added a pedal, crank and saddle to the previous scooter called the “dandy horse.”
Last year a group of bike enthusiasts planned a bike ride from New Haven to Ansonia during the International Arts and Ideas Festival in New Haven to honor Lallement.
EDC chairman Vinnie Scarlata said the city hopes to host a bike festival every year as a way to give Ansonia a new claim to fame.
“We have the chance if we can make this notable enough, to begin re-branding Ansonia,” Scarlata said in an e‑mail to organizers. “In the end it’s about reviving the Phoenix we are and remaking ourselves. We are the HOME of the Bicycle.”
