As temperatures drop and several hundred people in Ansonia remain without power, city officials have decided to open an overnight shelter at the Senior Center at 153 Main St.
Mayor James Della Volpe announced in a press release Friday morning that the shelter will open at 5 p.m. “to Ansonia residents needing a warm place to sleep.”
“Cots will be provided but we ask that residents bring necessary medications along with bedding (blankets, pillows),” the press release said. “Please, bring some form of identification. Residents will also be able to charge their cell phones at this location.”
The Joseph Doyle Senior Center will open from 5 p.m. until 8 a.m. Pets will not be allowed.
As of 11:42 a.m. United Illuminating reported on its website that 712 of its customers in Ansonia were still without power, about 8.42 percent of the city.
The Valley YMCA, at 12 State St., is offering showers and cell phone charging outlets to residents in need. They also ask that residents provide identification.
