Ansonia wants to create a Sept. 11 memorial at Webster Hose Memorial Park — and hopes to get a piece of steel from the World Trade Center to install at the site.
Eugene Sharkey, a member of the Board of Aldermen and a fire commissioner and volunteer fire fighter in Ansonia, brought up the proposal at the Board of Aldermen meeting last month. He asked for approval to move forward with the plans for the new park.
“We need a whole design of where we want to put it,” Sharkey said. “We need to make a formal application.”
Sharkey said he has started a committee to draw up plans and file the application to the Port Authority, which is overseeing distribution of the building remnants to fire departments and cities across America.
Webster Hose Memorial park is located on the corner of Father Salemi Drive and Central Street.
Sharkey said they hope to add new flagpoles to the park as part of the memorial.
Derby has also requested — and been approved — to receive a piece of the World Trade Center steel. A permanent Sept. 11 memorial is planned for the Derby Green.
