An Ansonia woman escaped with minor injuries after falling asleep at the wheel on Route 34 near the Stevenson Dam Wednesday morning.
The crash was reported shortly before 8 a.m. and caused Route 34 to be closed for about an hour.
The driver’s name wasn’t available, but Oxford Police Cpl. James Burr said the woman had just worked the night shift at her job when she fell asleep on Route 34 heading toward Derby.
She hit a rock embankment, then crossed the road and hit some trees. Firefighters were called to the scene to cut the woman from the vehicle using the jaws of life.
The 2005 Jeep Liberty was totaled — but the woman was not seriously injured, Burr said.
She was treated at Griffin Hospital.
The crash happened during the morning rush hour, creating major traffic headaches on Route 34.
