Ansonia's Resurgence Summarized In The New York Times

ANSONIA — The City of Ansonia’s resurgence was recognized in a real estate article published Wednesday in The New York Times.

Ansonia was featured in an article titled ​“Ansonia, Conn.: A Small City With a Sense of History,” as part of the ​“Living Here” series in the newspaper. The article is available online, but a subscription is required to read the article.

“Living Here” is a real estate feature in which a Times writer will provide an overview of a given town or city in the tri-state area. The goal is to provide an overview for a person who might be considering a move.

The article’s top photo in the online edition of the newspaper was Ansonia Library, along with 10 additional photos in a gallery shot by Tony Cenicola.

The article starts off describing Lourdes Romero and Marco Hernandez, who moved from Queens first to Bridgeport, and then to Ansonia.

From the article, quoting Romero:

The city is small enough that ​“you get to know the schoolteachers,” she said. ​“A lot of the teachers are local, and I bump into them all the time.”


The Times notes New Yorkers are again moving to the Valley, thanks to revitalization efforts. The Times notes the new residential units and the influx of restaurants that now mark Ansonia’s Main Street.

A few Realtors note that homes are selling quickly in the city, and a developer building new apartments on Main Street says rents are $1,500 to $2,200 a month.

A parent in the article gives a shout out to Ansonia Public Schools, saying teachers pay attention to students rather than just passing them along.

The article provides an overview of the city’s housing stock, and takes a glimpse at new businesses, such as the Zuppardi’s pizza place that opened on Beaver Street.

The sports complex on Olson Drive (currently under review by the Ansonia Planning and Zoning Commission) is mentioned, and there’s a quote from Ansonia Corporation Counsel John Marini.

The article includes a look at current real estate trends, noting there’s not much available, which is a norm lately.

​“The active listings ranged in price from $160,000 for a 1,200-square-foot house currently used as a rental to $700,000 for a six-family home.“


There’s also a brief overview of the demographics and test scores in the school district, and a quick look at Ansonia’s history.

The Ansonia real estate feature story was written by Lisa Prevost, a writer who lives in Connecticut.

Mayor David Cassetti, in a prepared statement, said it is nice to be noticed.

“It’s always nice to get positive feedback from the press. My team and I have been working hard to recharge our downtown and our entire City. Along with the addition of new housing, new restaurants, a new police station and senior center and the proposed conversion of the Armory into a community center, there is a lot to be proud of. Ansonia remains an affordable, unique and special place in the Valley. We want to return our old factory buildings into a new industrial/commercial site and to increase housing density in the downtown area. I am glad to see that the NY Times is paying attention. We are a great alternative for New Yorkers seeking a quieter, safer, conveniently located City to move to.”
