April 20 COVID-19 Update From The Naugatuck Valley Health District

Five more nursing home residents have died from COVID-19 complications, the Naugatuck Valley Health District announced Monday.

In addition, the NVHD reported the death of a Naugatuck resident — a woman in her 80s.

The five reported deaths were all in Shelton.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of those who have passed away due to complications from this virus,” the statement read.

The newly reported deaths happened at some point in the past week.

So far 77 people have suffered COVID-19 associated deaths in the lower Naugatuck Valley.

Of the 77 dead, 64 people were residents of nursing homes or assisted living facilities (note: there may have been a typo in Monday’s NVHD release regarding the number of deaths because two numbers were given).

The NVHD reported Monday that 808 people have tested positive for the virus locally.

The COVID-19 associated deaths reported by the NVHD have been confirmed through laboratory testing.

As of 5 p.m. on Monday, (April 20) 227 of the 808 confirmed cases among Valley residents are individuals who reside in a nursing home, assisted living facility, group home, or other similar settings.

That’s 28 percent of all confirmed cases.

The Johns Hopkins University & Medicine Coronavirus Resource Center reports about 36,000 people in the U.S. have died from COVID-19. About 72,000 have recovered.

The NVHD also reports:

The agency has linked free mental health and wellness resources for individuals, families, and first responders who may be experiencing heightened anxiety, stress, and other emotions during this pandemic on the webpage: www.nvhd.org/coping

Statewide COVD-19 data is available at https://portal.ct.gov/coronavirus and is also linked on the NVHD website www.nvhd.org/covid19-data.

As a reminder, all data reported is preliminary and subject to change. Test results may be reported several days after the result. Patient information may be updated after results have already been reported. Changes will be reflected in the new daily totals.”
