The Naugatuck Valley Health District learned of three more COVID-19 associated deaths in nursing homes in Seymour and Shelton, according to a statement released Monday.
Two people were residents of unidentified nursing homes in Shelton.
The third was in a nursing home in Seymour (Shady Knoll is not mentioned in the release, but is on a list from the state).
In the lower Naugatuck Valley, there are 978 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases. An additional 451 people have tested negative for the virus.
The virus has been hitting nursing homes and similar facilities very hard.
According to the health district, as of Monday there were 98 laboratory-confirmed deaths in the health district’s jurisdiction — 87 of those deaths were in local nursing homes, group homes, assisted living facilities or similar settings.
There are also 18 “probable” COVID-19 associated deaths in the Valley, according to the NVHD.
The NVHD jurisdiction includes Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Derby, Naugatuck, Seymour and Shelton.
Of the 978 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Valley, 26 percent are people in nursing homes or similar facilities. The National Guard is now helping state health officials with nursing home inspections.

Contrary to the constant posts on social media, all deaths are not being classified as COVID-19.
Statewide, COVID-19 related hospitalizations have fallen five days in a row, according to a story published in The CT Mirror.
A task force set up by Gov. Ned Lamont is looking at ways to “open” the state for business.
