Archie Moore’s Fundraiser For Fallen Bridgeport Firefighters

The Bridgeport Fire Department recruit class of 2008 will host a fundraiser at Archie Moore’s in Derby Friday to benefit two firefighters who were killed in a fire last month.

The event will be held from 5 to 10 p.m., and will include a raffle, said Dave Lenart, a member of the recruit class and a Derby alderman.

All proceeds will go toward the Bridgeport Fallen Firefighters Fund, which was set up to aid the families of Lt. Steven Valasquez and firefighter Michel Baik, who were killed while fighting a fire on Elmwood Avenue in Bridgeport in July.

He was a real family man, a real dedicated family man,” Lenart said of Baik, who was also in the 2008 recruit class. He was the oldest guy in our class. He was kind of like the old wise man of the class, I guess you could say.”

Lenart said during the five-hour fundraiser, people who are eating meals can offer extra money on their tips to go toward the fund.

There’s been several fundraisers around the area already,” Lenart said. All have been extremely successful. I think the volunteer firefighters from the Valley will definitely be there.”
