Oxford residents, show your art talent.
A community art project, aimed at creating a collaborative work of art that will be displayed in Town Hall, is on tap for Wednesday at the Oxford High School cafeteria.
The event gets underway at 7 p.m.
“There is no better way to bring people together other than with art,” said Rose McKinnon, chairman of the Board of Education, who sent out invitations to the event.
Art teacher Karen Giannamore of Great Oak Middle School took the project on.
It is made possible with a $9,600 grant from Young Audiences of CT, VSA Arts and CVS/Caremark.
The Oxford PTO committed $2,000 as an in-kind portion of the grant.
The mandala is a large wreath, and the art within it represents the collaboration of various members of the community.
The one that hangs in Oxford Town Hall should be three feet in diameter, she said.
Students from the middle school will help the community members with the art project.
“It’s a sense of a whole community,” Giannamore said.
A mandala is a geometric design, usually circular, symbolizing the universe. It is used in Hinduism and Buddhism as an aid to meditation.
The thing to meditate on, it would appear, is community togetherness.
“I really believe the community needs to come together,” McKinnon said.
First Selectwoman Mary Ann Drayton-Rogers said she’ll be happy to have the project displayed in Town Hall.
