Assaults Have North Main Street Residents Worried

Some residents from the North Main Street area want to meet with police and Mayor James Della Volpe to talk about several violent assaults in the area.

The residents believe a group of about eight teens between the ages of 13 and 18 are responsible for the crimes.

The Valley Indy talked to two residents Tuesday who said there have been five assaults in the last three weeks, but the victims are not necessarily reporting the crimes because they fear retribution.

Ansonia police Tuesday confirmed two incidents, but acknowledged there could be more that have gone unreported.

On June 22 at about 12 a.m., a Domino’s delivery driver was attacked by three or four people on Howard Avenue, according to police. They took the driver’s money and stole his vehicle, which hasn’t been located.

On June 29 at about 2:30 a.m. a 20-year-old man on North Main Street near the intersection of Main Street was badly beaten by a group of young men who stole his identification and his $600 bicycle.

The man, who was returning to his home after playing video games at a friend’s house, was treated at Yale-New Haven Hospital, where staples were placed in his head to close several gashes.

The two residents interviewed by the Valley Indy said they were frustrated that no one is publicizing the crimes, which they feared could cause more people to become victims.

In an e‑mail, Ansonia Police Lt. Andrew Cota said police are aware of the problem and are trying to arrest the people responsible.

At this time it is unknown if these incidents are related, but they are similar in nature,” Cota said. We have some information that we are piecing together to see if we can identify the individuals responsible. Police are aware of the incidents and have increased patrols in the affected areas.”

Della Volpe said the city is taking the incidents seriously and police will be meeting with residents privately to gather information on what’s happening. The meeting will be private due to the nature of what will be discussed.
