Assisted Living Facility Proposed At Split Rock

A company that runs senior living communities throughout New England wants to put a three-story, 89-unit facility on the remaining undeveloped land at the Center at Split Rock on Bridgeport Avenue in Shelton.

The proposal will be discussed at a public hearing next Wednesday (March 28) at 7 p.m. in City Hall.

The company, Benchmark Senior Living, currently has 16 senior living communities in the state and 27 others throughout New England.

Plans on file at City Hall indicate the proposed building is nearly 80,000 square feet.

The 14.4‑acre development opened in 2006. Click here to read a New Haven Register story about the ribbon-cutting.

An assisted living facility at the site was approved in 2008. But the approval was for a different developer, Sunrise, according to the minutes of the commission’s Feb. 14 meeting, which are posted below.

Wednesday’s hearing will focus mainly on the details of the plans, since using the property as an assisted living facility was approved in 2008, according to the minutes of the February meeting.

A letter on file with the application from city engineer Robert Kulacz endorsed the application subject to two conditions: that some changes are made to plans for drainage in a garden at the site, and that the developer obtain a permit from the state Department of Transportation during construction.

Another letter in the file, from a transportation engineer to Benchmark officials, indicates the State Traffic Commission’s 2008 approval of the project still stands.
