DERBY — Veterans from Derby’s American Legion John H. Collins Post 24 know what it means to give back.
That’s why they decided to honor several veterans and Valley citizens for their work in making their communities a better place during Post 24’s first awards luncheon held April 23.
The event, which took place at the Catholic War Veterans St. Michael Post 1562 banquet hall, drew more than 75 people. Post Commander Michael J. Klubek and Post 24 Adjutant Evelyn Conroy organized the event, which, in addition to an awards presentation, included a buffet lunch prepared by chefs Michael Cotela and Mike Rizzio.
Klubek, along with Post 24 Past Commander Erwin ‘Gus’ Williams, served as both emcees and presenters of the awards.
The distinguished honorees were: Grace Torres, Principal of St. Mary – St. Michael School; Randy Ritter, Scoutmaster Troop 3 Derby Boy Scouts; Thomas M. Voytek, Commander Catholic War Veterans Post 1562; Sarah and Chloe Walsh, Post 24 volunteers and Past Post 24 Commander William K. Bowers.
According to a press release from Post 24, each of the award winners made brief remarks to the crowd, placing an emphasis on the importance of family support, instilling proper moral values and teaching a sense of patriotism and service to the community to today’s youth.
High school students Sarah and Chloe Walsh, in addition to the Post 24 award they received for their volunteer work, were also given a citation and proclamation courtesy of the Connecticut General Assembly, presented by state Rep. Nicole Klarides-Ditria, R‑105. The Walsh sisters told the audience they enjoy volunteering their time “out of respect and honor for the sacrifices made by our active duty military and veterans.”
In addition to the awards, three of Post 24’s long-serving officers — chaplain James Hubbard, finance officer Paul Varsanik and post service officer Paul Lutson — were recognized for their service with certificates of A\appreciation. Klubek said each of them have always stepped up to assist with special projects and unforeseen matters “not for the recognition, but because of their dedication and willingness to serve.”
A final highlight and surprise of the event came when Williams was presented with a U.S. flag and Eagle trophy inscribed with the words “Dedicated Veteran” on it. Williams was initially supposed to receive the award from Post 1562 during a formal dinner back in 2020, but when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the event had to be postponed.
Voytek told the audience Williams has pretty much held every Officer position in the echelons of the American Legion, and “We thank this ‘Dedicated Veteran’ for his service which Gus continues to do today.”
