Update: Police Say Three-Month Old Baby Girl Has Died

Update: Derby police Lt. Justin Stanko sent an e‑mail Monday (Oct. 3) saying the autopsy results classified the baby’s death as undetermined, pending further tests.

At this point, there is no evidence to suggest that the manner of death was anything but natural,” Stanko said in the e‑mail.

A three-month-old baby girl who lost consciousness Friday evening at a residence on Dirienzo Heights has died, police said.

She passed away at 6:07 a.m. Saturday at Yale-New Haven Hospital, according to a prepared statement issued by police Saturday afternoon.

Pending further medical examination, the Derby Police Department is treating this as a standard death investigation, which is our protocol for all untimely deaths,” police said in a statement authorized by Lt. Justin Stanko.

Stanko said there were no obvious signs of physical trauma to the baby. Parental supervision is not a factor in the case, Stanko said.

An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted Monday.

Police, fire and EMS were sent to the residence at 5 p.m. Friday, according to police, after receiving a report that the child had stopped breathing.

A radio transmission from emergency responders first on the scene said the baby may have been in cardiac arrest.

The baby was taken to Griffin Hospital. A team of specialists came from Yale-New Haven Hospital to help the child.

She was revived, according to police.

An attempt was made to land the Lifestar helicopter in the area of Ryan Field during Friday’s Ansonia-Derby football game in order to take the baby to Yale-New Haven.

However, bad weather prevented the helicopter from landing until about 11 p.m. Friday.

The baby was on life support at the time she was flown to Yale-New Haven.
