The boy’s family contends the BB gun was found on the playground by students and that Irving staff needs to keep a better eye on the kids at recess.
The boy’s name was not released, as per state law.
When a student is expelled, learning continues at home, through services provided by the school.
The boy’s family has a chance to ask for reinstatement in January, the Register reported.
On Oct. 11, Irving School principal Jennifer Olson sent home a letter to parents saying an unloaded BB/pellet gun “was found” on the playground.
Students found the BB gun and told teachers who were on recess duty, according to the letter.
“A full investigation was done and police were contacted,” Olson told parents in the letter.
School officials opted to keep recess indoors for the remainder of the day.
“At no time were our students in danger,” according to the letter.
