Joe DiMartino was sworn in as Derby’s newest Alderman Thursday, May 24.
DiMartino, who previously served one term on the board, replaced Jay Benanto, who resigned because he is moving from Derby.
Benanto, a Republican, served six years as Alderman and represented the city’s Second Ward.
“I have appreciated the opportunity and experience that the citizens of Derby have provided to me during my six years of service and I thank them for their trust and support,” Benanto said in a letter.
Mayor Anthony Staffieri and the Board of Aldermen thanked Benanto for serving.
“You were a great asset to the city and to the Aldermen,” the mayor said.
The Republican Aldermen held a brief caucus during the May 24 meeting to choose DiMartino as Benanto’s replacement.
DiMartino works for the Department of Public Works and at Griffin Hospital. He is also the Derby High School softball coach.
