Bird Watching Hikes Offered In Derby

Experience the joy of observing birds in the wild, sharpen your bird identification skills and enjoy a Saturday morning hike through the grounds of the Kellogg Environmental Center and Osbornedale State Park. Walks may last for up to two hours, depending on conditions.

All levels of birders are encouraged to participate. Please dress for the weather and meet in the parking lot of the Kellogg Environmental Center, 500 Hawthorne Avenue, Derby. The Naugatuck Valley Audubon Society, Inc., in cooperation with the Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEPs) Kellogg Environmental Center will host a program titled Whip-poor-wills at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at the Kellogg Environmental Center in Derby, Connecticut.

Shannon Kearney-McGee, a wildlife technician for the CT DEP Wildlife Division since 2005, will give a slide presentation. Shannon’s primary focus is research and monitoring of bird species of greatest conservation need. She has initiated many monitoring and research programs focusing on species such as woodland raptors, owls, whip-poor-wills, chimney swifts, nighthawks, and shrub land birds. Her presentation on Whip-poor-wills will focus on their unique characteristics, their conservation status and the monitoring and research efforts that have been conducted by the CT DEP.

The Kellogg Environmental Center is a facility of the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, Outdoor Recreation Division and is located at 500 Hawthorne
Avenue, Derby, CT. A donation of $4.00/adult and $2/student or child is requested.
