Bloomberg BusinessWeek Recognizes Shelton

Shelton has been named a Best Affordable Suburb” by Bloomberg BusinessWeek for the second year in a row.

Each year Bloomberg BusinessWeek evaluates hundreds of communities based on living expenses, income, crime rate, schools, commute, economy, diversity and open space.

The focus is not luxury, but rather communities where families can live well for less and enjoy good schools, low crime, and reasonable commutes,” the article accompanying the ranking says.

Bloomberg BusinessWeek names a Best Affordable Suburb” for the whole country, and for each of the states.

Shelton was named the Best Affordable Suburb” for Connecticut in 2010, and 2009.

The report says: While the Shelton School District has recently faced budget issues, its students performed better than the state average in 2008-09, according to the district’s No Child Left Behind report. The area offers residents access to hiking trails and areas for fishing, boating, and biking, as well as geocaching and letterboxing.”

City officials were pleased with the ranking. Lauretti brought it up during his budget presentation last month, when Lauretti proposed a tax decrease for 2011-12.

In spite of the most difficult of economic times, there is good financial and economic news to report for our city, largely due to our management policy of not spending beyond our means,” Thomas D. Taylor, Lauretti’s administrative assistant wrote in a press release this week.

Bloomberg BussinessWeek named Fisher, Indiana as the top suburb in the United States.
