Bomb Squad Called To Seymour Town Hall

The state police bomb squad was called to Seymour Town Hall Wednesday afternoon after a resident went there to speak with the fire marshal about disposing of blasting caps.

Lt. Paul Satkowski said the caps were eventually disposed of at the town’s transfer station on Silvermine Road.

According to a press release issued jointly by police and First Selectman Kurt Miller, the resident arrived at Town Hall about 12:45 p.m. The blasting caps he had were from a deceased family member, and he did not know the potential severity of the situation nor mean to put anyone in danger,” the press release said.

At no time were any residents or staff in any danger, according to the press release.

Officials said Fire Marshal Paul Wetowitz called state police in order to take proper precautions and protect residents and employees.

The state police then dispatched the bomb squad, which arrived about 1:50 p.m.

Satkowski said that Town Hall remained open and functional during the incident.

The blasting caps — two paper shopping bags full — were in a toolbox on the resident’s pickup truck, and were loaded into a dumptruck, Satkowski said.

They were then brought to the transfer station for the bomb squad to detonate them.

First Street was temporarily closed during the incident, according to the press release.
