Boy Scouts ‘Old Timers’ Night

Seventy years ago eighteen members of Boy Scout Troop 3 Derby participated in the World’s Fair held in New York City. 

The scouts, under the direction of Scoutmaster Edmund D. Strang, served as Saftey Monitors and stayed at the Boy Scout Service Camp with scouts from all over the United States. 

Rodman Kneen Sr, age 86, was one of those scouts. 

Currently a Troop 3 Committee Member and active in Scouting for 77 years, Kneen will discuss his memories of the World’s Fair at Troop 3’s annual Old Timer’s Night” on December 27 at Derby 2nd Congregational Church on Elizabeth St. 

The troop has been holding the Old Timer’s Night” since the end of World War II, when more than 100 alumni had been actively serving in the military. 

Founded in 1914 the troop maintains 80 years of scrapbooks which will be on display along with other world’s fair memoribilia from Mr. Robert DeForest and the late Peter Moresko. 

Alumni and friends of Troop 3 are encouraged to bring additional Scouting memorabilia for the display. 

The event begins with at 6:30 p.m. with an Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Timothy Stankye, a third generation Troop 3 Eagle Scout, joining his father Richard Stankye and grandfather Charles Stankye, Jr. all from Derby.
