UPDATE: Suspect In Shelton Standoff Appears In Court

UPDATE: Bryan Gagnon appeared in court at about 12 p.m. Wednesday. A judge set bail at $250,000 and he was ordered to stay away from his wife and her boyfriend. His case was transferred to Milford and he is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 2.

The following story was originally published Aug. 18.

Andrew Acuzzo was spending a rare day home Tuesday when a frantic, half dressed man came running up to his Buddington Road home.

The man, wearing only shorts, told Acuzzo that another man with a gun had entered a home at 164 Buddington Road, and had fired shots in the house.

He said he heard a shot gun, and said his girlfriend was in the house,” Acuzzo said. He wanted me to come to the house. I told him I would call police.”

So Acuzzo picked up the phone. Meanwhile, the shirtless man — who Acuzzo didn’t know and who has not been identified by police — ran back toward the home where the gunman was.

It was the start of a two-hour stand off between police and the gunman, later identified as Bryan Gagnon of Northford, Conn.

Shelton police responded to a call for shots fired at the home at about 12:15 p.m. When they arrived they found Gagnon barricaded inside, threatening to harm himself.

Over the next two hours, a K‑9 unit, state police emergency services unit, and two hostage negotiators responded to the home.

Shelton police set up a perimeter around the house — evacuating homes and blocking off Buddington Road about a half mile away.

After talking with Gagnon on his cell phone, police were finally able to get him to come out of the house unharmed at about 2:15 p.m.

In a statement released later Tuesday, Sgt. Robert Kozlowsky said a woman — identified only as Gagnon’s estranged wife — and another unnamed victim had been able to get out of the house unharmed.

Police charged Gagnon with burglary and took him to a local hospital for evaluation. Police said the incident began as a dispute between Gagnon and his estranged wife.

They expect to file more charges for the incident, Kozlowsky said.
