Burglary Suspect Appears In Court

Seymour police have filed new charges against the man accused in a string of daytime burglaries.

Now, Douglas Fast, 47, is facing several counts of burglary, larceny, and criminal mischief in six different cases in Seymour and Shelton.

He is also charged with interfering with an officer, engaging police in a pursuit, reckless driving, and weapons charges after he tried to escape police on Route 8 in December.

Fast appeared at Superior Court in Milford Thursday. He remains held on $175,000 bond, and is scheduled to appear in court next on March 13.

Fast was first arrested on Dec. 21, 2011, after a resident returning home to his Patrick Drive house saw a strange car in the driveway and called 911. Police tried to stop the car on Mountain Road, but the suspect drove away, then led police on a chase through Seymour and onto Route 8 south.

Police stopped the car near exit 19 and arrested Fast. Police said they searched his home in Stratford and found items believed to be stolen from homes in the area.

New Charges

After sorting through some of the stolen items, Seymour and Shelton police were able to get arrest warrants charging Fast in more burglaries.

In January, Shelton police arrested Fast on two warrants, claiming he burglarized two homes, including one where a 14-year-old girl was home at the time, hiding in the closet.

On Feb. 16, Seymour police filed three more arrest warrants, for burglaries committed on Bungay Road and Brookfield Road.

Police are sorting out the stolen items they found at Fast’s home.

State’s Attorney Kevin D. Lawlor on Thursday said some of the residents who had items stolen have already identified the items.

Judge Richard Arnold agreed to release some of those items to their owners after they are photographed for evidence.

Fast did not enter a plea on Thursday, and his private attorney Tina Sypek D’Amato said it would likely be some time before he does.
