Car Crashes: Derby And Oxford

Two people were sent to area hospitals after crashes in Derby and Oxford Thursday night.

The first wreck happened about 6:30 p.m., when Derby fire and ambulance were sent to Route 34 at the intersection with Gilbert Street.

A white SUV rolled over near the intersection.

It was unclear how the accident happened, but one person — a female — was sent to Yale-New Haven Hospital’s trauma center.

Kim Pasquini sent along the photo you see here. She said, via a post on the Valley Indy’s Facebook page, that neighbors rushed to helped the woman out of the over-turned vehicle.

Then, at about 8 p.m., Oxford fire, police and EMS were sent to the area of 238 Oxford Road (Route 67), where a vehicle plunged into the Little River.

It’s unclear just how the accident happened. Initial state police radio dispatches indicated the driver, a woman, suffered minor injuries. She was taken by ambulance to Waterbury Hospital.

Heavy rains had caused the river to swell. The car, a Chevy Cobalt, according to a Facebook reader, became wedged under a bridge.

A Seymour Fire Department dive team went into the river to secure hooks to the vehicle so that it could be dragged out. The road was opened again about 10 p.m.
