Case Continued For DUI Suspect Accused Of Causing Shelton Officer’s Death

The lawyer for a man accused of striking and killing a Shelton police officer while driving under the influence is reviewing photographic evidence collected at the scene.

Bruce Knapik made a brief appearance in Superior Court in Derby court Thursday, May 12 with his lawyer, Edward Gavin.

Gavin told Judge Burton Kaplan that he had just received a computer disc with photographs connected to the case from prosecutors and that he needed time to review them.

Kaplan continued the case to June 21.

In addition to driving under the influence, Knapik is charged with second-degree manslaughter with a motor vehicle in connection to the July 3 crash that killed veteran Shelton police Officer Orville Smith.

Knapik has pleaded not guilty.

Smith was on a private-duty job directing traffic on Route 110 when Knapik allegedly struck him. Smith died three days later.

A Shelton police officer participated in a bicycle tour to the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C. last week to raise money for Smith’s family.
