ANSONIA — The City of Ansonia recently honored General Muffler and Auto Supply, a family-owned business with roots in the city dating back 78 years.

Mayor David Cassetti gave the business at 670 Main St. a key to the city, and thanked them for their years of service.

Thank you for your hard work. We are proud to have you in Ansonia,” the Cassetti administration said in a post on Facebook.

William Nicoletti Sr. first opened a general store on Central Street in Ansonia in 1945. Auto parts took off as the shop’s staple, which led the business to becoming General Automatic Service & Supply.”

After the Flood of 1955 the business relocated to Main Street at Columbia Street, where Nicoletti ran the business with his two sons, Louis Sr. and William Jr.

In the 1960s the business morphed again, this time to incorporate auto repairs, with a specialty in mufflers. At that point the name changed to General Muffler and Automotive Supply.”

The expanded business moved to its current location in 1976. It’s now operated by a third generation of the Nicoletti family.
