This evening (Friday, Jan. 18) the St. Mary-St. Michael Girls Varsity and Girls JV basketball teams will be in action at Irving School.
The Varsity team is undefeated at 8 – 0 and is in first place in the Housatonic Division of the Greater New Haven Parochial Athletic League.
The tip-off is at 6:00 p.m. against Assumption of Ansonia who is 4 – 4 and fighting for a playoff spot.
The JV team is 3 – 2 and will be playing St. Mary’s of Milford who is 2 – 2. Both teams are fighting for a playoff berth.
The fact that St. Mary-St. Michael is able to play in Derby is a good story. For the past four years, the teams have had to travel to New Haven, West Haven, and Milford to play their “home” games.
Through the combined efforts of the principals of St. Mary-St. Michael and Irving Schools, and Parks and Recreation Director Dennis O’Connell, the team has been allowed to call Irving School home on Friday nights.
Finally, the Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of Hartford Dr. Dale Hoyt is expected to make a brief appearance at tonight’s varsity game.
His schedule is tight but he expressed interest in seeing the Valley’s premier Catholic elementary schools compete against each other.
