SEYMOUR — The fire marshal has not determined the cause of a house fire that displaced a family of four on Knorr Avenue last week.
“Unfortunately, the cause is undetermined,” Seymour Fire Marshal Timothy Willis said. “It appears it was an accidental fire, but unfortunately, we cannot rule out a few things. That being said, there was no wrongdoing of any kind.”
Not issuing a precise cause isn’t unusual in fire investigations, especially with fires where there is significant damage.
Willis said the Jan. 19 fire at a two-story home started outside the rear of the home. He said he is waiting to hear back from a private investigator for the insurance company before his investigation can be wrapped up.
The family, along with the family dog and cat, was deemed uninhabitable by Willis following the fire. An adult and two juveniles were home when the fire broke out just after 8 a.m. Two of the family members were taken to the hospital to get evaluated for possible smoke inhalation.
“Fortunately, everyone, including the pets, is doing well,” Willis said.
The local Red Cross chapter responded to the scene, as well.
A GoFundMe page was created to help the family. As of Thursday (Jan. 26) the set goal of $10,000 had been exceeded, with a total of $10,890 raised.
Willis had said the bulk of the fire was in the attic, with flames quickly spreading to the roof. He said firefighters from Beacon Falls and Oxford provided mutual aid, while fire companies from Ansonia and Bethany covered Seymour while Seymour firefighters battled the blaze.
