Ceiling Fire Extinguished At St. Mary - St. Michael School In Derby

DERBY — The fire chief said a kindergarten classroom at the St. Mary – St. Michael School was damaged after a fire started in the ceiling Friday.

No injuries were reported.

Derby Fire Department Chief David Lenart said the fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause and origin.

Lenart said the fire appears to have been started accidentally by some contractors who were working on windows within the building. The fire was reported at about 12:50 p.m. with firefighters on scene for a little over an hour.

There were about 30 children and staffers attending a camp at the school, which is at 14 Derby Ave. There was no one in the classroom when the fire was discovered.

The people quickly left the building. The children were taken across the street to the gym at The Irving School.

Lenart said one classroom was damaged and smoke was present throughout the building.

Ansonia and Shelton fire departments responded to the scene as well.
