OXFORD — The Chabad Jewish Center of Oxford is excited to announce its upcoming Community Purim Celebration, on Friday, March 14th, at 4:30 pm. The event will include an array of festivities and entertainment for all ages.
One of the most joyous dates on the Jewish calendar, Purim commemorates the abolition in 356 B.C.E. of a decree calling for the extermination of the Jewish people throughout the Persian Empire. Purim is observed with the reading of the Megillah (Scroll of Esther) which recounts the story of the Purim miracle, gifting food gifts to friends, giving charity to the needy and enjoying a festive Purim meal.
Children — and some adventurous adults too — traditionally dress in costumes, an allusion to G‑d’s hand in the Purim miracle, which was disguised by natural events.
The celebration will feature an animated megillah reading, delicious dinner, a balloon artist, and of course hamantashen.
“Purim is a time to celebrate as a community, to gather together — adults and children — to hear the story of our survival as a people,” said Rabbi Shmaya Hecht, co-director of Chabad Jewish Center of Oxford. “What greater joy can there be than to be surrounded by family and friends displaying our Jewish pride and celebrating our rich heritage!”
