That’s the fire prevention reminder from the Seymour Fire Marshal’s office.
Daylight savings begins on March 13.
This is the time that we recommend you swap out the old batteries in your smoke alarm with fresh ones.
Some quick facts compiled from the (NFPA) National Fire Protection Association.
- 40 percent of smoke alarm owners test their smoke alarms at least every few months, while about 24 percent do it only twice a year and 11 percent rarely ever do it.
- Most adults (71 percent) report having a home fire escape plan but more than half (53 percent) said they never practice it.
- Statistically a working smoke detector in the home reduces the chance of dieing in a fire by over 50 percent.
Tips:
- Never remove or disable a smoke alarm
- Test smoke alarms at lease once a month using the test button, and make sure eveyone knows their sound
- If an alarm chirps, warning the battery is low, replace the battery immediately
- Replace smoke alarms, every ten years.
