Derby’s Mike Cannici hosts “Hometown Heroes,” a once-a-month public access talk show.
It airs the second Sunday of the month at 6 p.m. It airs on Comcast channel 10 and Frontier channel 199.
Tonight (Sunday, Jan. 10) his guest is Charlie DiCenso, former Derby High School football coach.
The Valley Indy conducted the following Q & A with Cannici over e‑mail. Parts of the interview are condensed.
Valley Independent Sentinel: Tell us about the show.
Cannici: The name of the show is “Hometown Heroes.” I began doing it in May of 2015. Thus far I have had on Bill Pucci, former writer for the Evening Sentinel, Valley Drummer and The Valley Times, the family of legendary Ansonia Football Coach Jack Hunt and long-time cable 10 announcers Ed Clements and Buddy Chernovitz, who called the Valley high school football games from 1984 to 2007.
(Tonight) I’ll have part one of a two part show with legendary Derby football player and coach Charlie DiCenso.
Basically the show is about paying tribute to those who have impacted their town in a positive way.
VIS: What are some highlights of the DiCenso discussion?
Cannici:“We talked in part one about his playing career. He played for Coach Ron Carbone. We also talk about his years as an assistant for Lou DeFillippo. He coached with Lou from 1969 – 1982 and then took over for Lou in ’83 when Lou retired. In part two we talked about his years as a head coach.
VIS: What was your favorite part of the interview?
Cannici: I can’t tell you a favorite part because everything was so good. I liked how real and humble he was about everything. He is a class act all the way.
