SEYMOUR — Christopher Bowen, a member of the Seymour Board of Selectpersons, resigned his position on Wednesday because he plans to move out of state.
“With my family’s pending move to northern Virginia, and to ensure that my successor can hit the ground running in 2023, I am resigning my seat on the Board of Selectpersons, effective immediately,” Bowen wrote in a letter to his fellow elected officials on Dec. 21.
Bowen was elected as a Selectman in November 2019. He is currently in his second term. He ran as a Democrat, but switched to unaffiliated in March.
He grew up in Seymour, attended Seymour Public Schools until attending Emmett O’Brien Technical High School, from where he graduated in 1999 before enlisting in the U.S. Navy.
Bowen, who works as a cellular engineer for Ventus Technologies, is planning to move to Virginia, where his wife’s family lives.
In his resignation letter, Bowen said he was proud to have been part of a group that guided Seymour through the COVID-19 pandemic, embarked upon road repairs, and opened Roosevelt Drive/Route 34 to future development.
Bowen said the Seymour Board of Selectpersons is a strong group because they work together in a nonpartisan manner.
Bowen is also an Adjutant for American Legion Post 10, in addition to being a Little League umpire.
According to Seymour Town Attorney Richard Buturla, the town charter gives the Board of Selectpersons 30 days to fill the vacancy.
Bowen’s replacement will be a Democrat, because that is the party and line Bowen was elected on.
First Selectwoman Annmarie Drugonis, a Republican, said she would reach out to the Seymour Democratic Town Committee for a name to replace the departing Bowen.
The board will then vote on whether to seat the replacement candidate. The board was scheduled to formally accept Bowen’s resignation at a meeting scheduled for Wednesday evening.
Right now there are five Republicans on the board, one Democrat and one unaffiliated member (Bowen).
