Citizen Journalists Detail Ansonia Water Main Break

A busted water main on Church Street in Ansonia left residents in Ansonia, Derby and Seymour with either no water or low water pressure Sunday morning.

Readers gave drop-by-drop accounts on the Valley Indy’s Facebook page. One reader even posted video of the dismal water flow in her kitchen sink.

Stacey Whelan broke the news at about 7:30 a.m. with a post on the Valley Indy Facebook page telling the public, If you woke up to no water in derby or Ansonia and parts of Seymour it’s because there is a water main break on church street in Ansonia.”

The comment was re-posted by Valley Indy staff to nearly 5,000 Valley Facebook readers.

Many residents in the lower Valley did, in fact, wake up with a water problem. They flooded the Regional Water Authority with questions. The call volume was apparently intense, as readers reported they couldn’t get through.

Luckily, residents were able to keep each other informed by posting on the Valley Indy Facebook page.

Regional Water sent out information on the problem at 9:30 a.m., 10:40 a.m. and 2:21 p.m., at which time the company reported repairs had been made.

Among the customers affected Sunday — Griffin Hospital.

The hospital activated its disaster plan at about 7:30 a.m. after losing water. Water service was restored at 11 a.m.

There were no interruptions in patient care during the water outage. The hospital prepared to implement any necessary contingency measures during the brief interruption to ensure continuity of care, consistent with planning and drills it regularly conducts as part of its ongoing emergency preparedness activities,” according to a prepared statement from hospital officials.

Whelan’s initial post generated about 60 comments by 5 p.m. Sunday.
