Clear Wireless Coming To Shelton

A wireless Internet provider entering the market in Connecticut will be installing its equipment in Shelton.

Clear Wireless, also known as Clearwire Corp., started in 2003 and is based in Kirkland, Wash. It provides wireless Internet access in 51 major U.S. cities, according to Chris Comes, the company’s eastern region spokesman.

Customer packages range in price from about $40 to about $65.

Comes did not know when his company would install the equipment.

Clear Wireless is partly owned by Sprint and Time Warner Cable.

Last month the Shelton Planning and Zoning Commission gave Clear Wireless permission to put three antennae and three satellite dishes on a water tower at 605 Huntington St. The company will also be installing three antennae and two dishes on the roof of a building at 2 Mountain View Drive, according to Jennifer A. Herz, a lawyer for the company.

Herz spoke to the commission on the company’s behalf last month.

The company is using existing locations so they don’t have to construct any new towers,” Herz said.

None of the equipment would rise higher than the existing hardware, and all would be painted and screened, she added.

Herz said the dishes are about two feet in diameter, and can be painted any color the board wants.

Zoning Administrator Rick Schultz said zoning officials notified all three neighbors around 605 Huntington St. before last month’s meeting.
