Close Races Trigger Two Recounts In Derby

DERBY — Two races for elected office were close enough to trigger recounts, city officials announced Wednesday.

The recounts are in the First Ward Aldermanic race, where there were six candidates for three seats. According to unofficial results, 17 votes separate third place finisher Sarah Widomski (Democrat) and fourth-place finisher Rich DiCarlo (Republican). Widomski is an incumbent.

The other recount is for the Derby Board of Education, where 11 votes separate incumbents George Kurtyka (Democrat) and Tara Hyder (Republican). Kurtyka received 1,345 votes to Hyder’s 1,334.

The recount is scheduled for 12 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2021 at Derby City Hall, 1 Elizabeth St.

Recounts take several hours and the public is allowed to observe.

In Connecticut, recounts are automatic when the vote difference is less than 20, or when the difference is less than .5 percent of the total number of votes cast but not more than 2,000 votes.
