Pretty soon you won’t have to drive to Ansonia or Southbury to get your car washed.
That’s because Phil Pedros of Oxford has already started work on the construction of a new, $900,000 car wash — to be called “Philly’s Car Wash.”
The business is being built on 1 acre behind the Mountain Road Plaza, directly behind Starbucks and the Naugatuck Savings and Loan bank.
Workers last week started clearing the land and blasting rock to make way for the new car wash.
Pedros said he expects his new car wash will be open by the end of November.
He said the building will be 3,000 square feet. The car wash will be one bay in which you stay in your car while it’s being washed. He said the car wash will have a 100-foot tunnel and will be designed by Belanger Equipment of Michigan.
The system is a soft-cloth washing system that only takes about three minutes.
When it opens, Pedros said he’d be open seven days a week. Hours and prices have yet to be determined.
“We’re still working out the details,’’ Pedros said.
Pedros said he looked at other sites, including Oxford, but did not find them as suitable as the one-acre site he chose behind Mountain Road Plaza, that also includes a credit union, nail salon and liquor store.
First Selectman Robert J. Koskelowski has said he is pleased that the town is seeing construction along Route 67, especially in light of the economy.
Along with the new car wash, a new CVS Pharmacy is being built at the corner of West Street and Route 67, will be located next to the Oxmour Plaza, which is adjacent to Naugatuck Savings and Loan and the Mountain Road Plaza.
Mike DeAngelis, director of public relations for CVS, said the company is building a new 12,000 square foot pharmacy.
He said CVS — based in Woonsocket, R.I. -– expects the new store to open in late spring of 2010. He said he did not know how many new jobs would be created with the opening of the new store.
The new store will be built at 215 – 223 West Street and calls for the demolition of an old home on the site.
The entrance to the store will be through the current entrance of Oxmour Plaza and there will be an exit (right only) on West Street. The current CVS, located at 277 Bank Street in Klarides Village, will remain open until the new store is completed.
