Commodore Hull Road Race Is Thursday

The Commodore Hull Thanksgiving Day Road Race kicks off Thursday (Nov. 22) at 8 a.m. at the Farmer’s Market on Canal Street in Shelton.

About 700 runners will be participating, according to race organizers.

Road Closures

A number of roads will closed in Shelton and Derby during the race, which raises money for the Boys and Girls Club.

Organizers estimate runners will be off the course by 9 a.m.

During the race Canal Street will be closed to traffic from Wharf, Hill and Cornell Streets.

There will be one lane of traffic open on Howe Avenue (Rt. 110) between Cornell Street and Bridge Street.

The bridge between Derby and Shelton will be closed.

In Derby, Main Street (Route 34) will be closed between Olivia and Elizabeth Streets.

Access to Elizabeth Street from Main Street up to the Derby Public Library at Seymour Avenue will also be limited during the race.

The race ends back at Canal Street in Shelton.

Ribas Honored

Jack Ribas, the retiring executive director of the Boys and Girls Club, is this year’s honorary race starter.

Good Stuff

Project Purple, a group that raises awareness and funds to combat pancreatic cancer, will be on hand with a soup tent during the race. This is from an e‑mail sent by race organizers:

Project Purple will be out in force again this year with brightly clad runners as well as their Soup Tent” and plenty of information about their battle to cure pancreatic cancer. Stop by on race day to learn more. They will be on the side of the Farmers Market (on Shelton’s Canal Street).

The Young Emerging Professionals, a committee of the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce, will be back again this year conducting their annual Thanksgiving Food Collection.

They’ll be on hand during packet pickup on Sunday and Wednesday and on race day. Bring along a non-perishable food item and help to brighten the holiday for someone in need!

Runners will get a big lift along the course this year thanks to the young athletes from Derby’s award winning Pop Warner Jr. Pee Wee cheerleading team.

They’ll be heading to Florida for the national championships on December 3, but on Thanksgiving morning, you’ll see (and hear) them as you run up and down Elizabeth Street in Derby, race organizers said.
