What’s that funky metal ear of corn located on Route 110, near Birdseye Road in Shelton?
It’s a recycled-materials sculpture by Shelton artist Joe DeMarco, pointing drivers toward Stone Gardens Farm, where fresh corn is now for sale.
A five-foot metal sculpture of a giant ear of corn, complete with a red metal mouth about to chomp down on the ear, can now be seen next to the sign for Stone Gardens Farm on Route 110. Within the corn’s silks is an arrow, pointing potential customers in the direction of the farm, located at 83 Saw Mill City Road.
The sculpture is made entirely of recycled metal materials, including old propane tanks, steel pieces from an old oil tank, and metal wires representing the corn’s silks.
The red mouth, complete with only three teeth, was a “funky idea” of DeMarco’s, the touch of whimsy that he often likes to add in his work.
“I like to do whimsical stuff, and the mouth should indicate that the corn is ready,” said DeMarco. “It should put a smile on people’s faces.”
