The case of the New Haven man who allegedly shot Tyrease Gatison in the leg inside in front of two children in an apartment on Olson Drive was transferred from Derby Superior Court to the Milford Judicial District Monday.
Jamar Perry, 28 of New Haven was charged Nov.19 with first-degree assault, first-degree attempt to commit burglary, criminal possession of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit and risk of injury to a minor following the Nov. 16 shooting at the Riverside Apartments.
Perry is currently being held on $175,000 bond.
According to police, Perry was seen walking through the Riverside Apartment complex on Olson Drive Nov. 16 and asked someone where he could buy marijuana.
That person took Perry to an apartment where Perry could get change for a $100 bill.
Once inside the apartment, Perry allegedly pulled a chrome pistol from his waistband and demanded money from Gatison, 22.
When Gatison refused, Perry told him not to make him “do it” in front of the man’s children and then shot him in the right thigh, police said.
Perry — dressed in prison garb — briefly appeared in Derby Superior Court Monday before Judge Burton Kaplan.
Public defender Bruce Weiant, representing Perry, requested Kaplan transfer the case to Milford Superior Court, where more serious crimes are heard.
Perry also has several prior convictions, including first-degree forgery in 2001, second degree sexual assault in 2002 and failure to register as a sex offender in 2006.
Perry is due in Milford Superior Court on Jan. 8.
