A head-on crash Monday on Roosevelt Drive in Derby may have been caused by a driver who fell asleep at the wheel, according to an accident report from the Derby Police Department.
Police, fire and ambulance crews responded to the wreck near Cedric Avenue at 7:22 p.m.
A Subaru Outback driven by a 59-year-old woman from Sherman crossed the double-yellow line and was struck by a tractor-trailer heading west.
The impact bounced the Subaru back into the eastbound lane.
Derby firefighters had to use Hurst tools, commonly referred to as the jaws of life, to cut the woman out of her car. It took longer than usual because of the woman’s position within the wreckage.
She was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital. Updated information on her condition was not available Wednesday, though she was conscious and alert as firefighters worked to get her out of her crumpled car.
The truck driver, a New Haven resident, was not injured.
The woman told police that she had been up since 12:30 a.m. and did not remember what happened immediately before the crash.
She said she may have fallen asleep, according to police.
The investigating officer found her at fault for the crash and issued a warning for not staying in the proper lane.
