CWV Post 1562 Holds Annual Corporate Communion & Awards Breakfast

DERBY — On April 6, Catholic War Veterans Post 1562 held its annual Corporate Communion Mass and Awards Ceremony Breakfast, with approximately 40 members and guests in attendance.

The day began with 9 a.m. Mass at St. Michael’s Church. 2nd Vice Commander Mike Kasinskas delivered the readings, Auxiliary 1st VP Margaret Mattei served as lector, and member Christian Tracz provided organ accompaniment — including a moving rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner following Communion.

Before the conclusion of the Mass, Post Commander Tom Voytek encouraged attendees to consider joining the Post and to invite friends and family, especially veterans and active-duty military, to get involved.

Among the veteran-related causes that the Post supports are Homes for Heroes, Tunnel to Towers and the West Haven Veterans Hospital. The Post also supports many community and educational activities for the area’s school children.

Following the service, the group gathered for breakfast and the annual awards presentation. Commander Voytek presented the 2024 Commander’s Award to social member Jamie Puro, recognizing his unwavering dedication to the Post.

This award recognizes that Jamie goes above and beyond anything we’ve ever asked,” Voytek said. Whether it’s custodial work, shopping for supplies, or cleaning the hall, he gets it done before he’s even asked.”

Puro accepted the award with heartfelt words: This is a good organization. I love volunteering for a great cause. Thank you for the award — I love you guys; this is like family.”

The breakfast ceremony also recognized the volunteer efforts of Derby school students, Alivia Zyskowski and Haley Acoba, part of St. Michael’s Confirmation Class, who were lauded for their help at key events in 2024 including the Wreaths Across America ceremony, annual food drive and tag sale.
