Derby’s Old Uptown Cemetery is being beautified by the joint efforts of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Derby Post 10585, Girl Scout Troop 60041, and the Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
The Derby VFW, led by Bernard Williams, erected a new flag pole by the Commodore Hull monument. Girl Scout Troop 60041, led by Rosemarie Brady and DAR member Tammy Crews, put in mulch bought through donations by Home Depot of Derby and DAR chapter members.
On Veterans Day, in addition to planting 60 daffodil bulbs, the Girl Scouts planted 6 gallon-sized day lilies and 8 purple asters donated by Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse of Derby. Ms. Crews thanked Lowe’s “because now the garden will have instant color and won’t have to wait for spring to arrive”. Ms. Crews also wished to thank Tony Dias, the groundskeeper of the Uptown Cemetery for all his help and support.
The Old Uptown Cemetery was rescued in the late 1890’s by the newly organized Sarah Riggs Humphreys Chapter and it is fitting that the chapter returns to help beautify this historic cemetery.
The Daughters of the American Revolution encourages community service projects such as this and benefits both the students and the community. The Girl Scout Troop feels a sense of accomplishment and plans on returning to continue with the beautification project in anticipation of a Spring time dedication by the Derby VFW.
