DAR: National Day Of Prayer Is May 1

The Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) reminds everyone that Thursday, May 1, 2025 is the National Day of Prayer.

The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May inviting every one of all faiths to pray for our nation. The president is required by law to sign a proclamation each year encouraging all Americans to pray on this day. It is fitting that we, in 2025, take a day to meditate and pray for peace in our dealings with others remembering that we are all brothers and sisters and are truly instruments of peace.

There is a long tradition of prayer in our nation. Two hundred and fifty years ago, the Continental Congress issued a proclamation to observe a day of public humiliation, fasting, and prayer’ on July 20, 1775. Twenty years later, in 1795, George Washington proclaimed a day of public thanksgiving and prayer. The National Day of Prayer continued when President Abraham Lincoln called for a Day of Prayer in 1863 and was made into law in 1952 by a joint resolution of the Congress. This was signed into law by President Truman. The law was amended by President Reagan designating the first Thursday in May as the National Day of Prayer in 1988.

The theme this year is: Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13 NASB)

Let us Pray for America and let us pray for peace in the world.
