DEEP Closes Indian Well State Park Because Of Water Quality

DEEP PhotoThe state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection announced Tuesday that Indian Well State Park in Shelton was closed to swimmers because of oily material” found in the swimming area of the Housatonic River.

The DEEP updates swimming quality reports each week during the summer — starting Memorial Day weekend and continuing through Labor Day weekend — to notify the public where it is safe for swimming.

Samples are collected by DEEP staff and are analyzed at the Department of Public Health Lab. Local health departments are responsible for sampling municipal swimming areas.

For information on closures of local swimming areas contact the local public health agency.

The water quality report for July 10 only listed one other swimming area in the state as closed: Pachaug State Forest (Green Falls Pond) in Voluntown. All other beaches and state parks remain open.
