Derby Aldermen added to more properties to its blight list July 26.
The property at 249 Hawthorne Ave. is in foreclosure limbo, as the original owner has abandoned the property.
Several people were living in the home, even through the owner was not there. Last winter the electricity was shut off, but squatters remained inside.
City officials declared the house uninhabitable and told neighbors to call police if anyone was spotted on the property. At least one arrest was made from a neighbor’s report.
The property is also overgrown.
The house, built in 1919, has six bedrooms and two bathrooms. Its assessed value is $177,870.
The Derby Aldermen also added a property at 151 Pleasant View Road to the city’s blight list July 26.
That’s another foreclosure property, building official David Kopjanski said. It’s bank-owned, and the bank had been sending crews to begin cleaning the vacant property.
However, those efforts stopped, so Derby’s facilities inspectors recommended its inclusion on the blight list.
The four-bedroom, ranch-style home was built in 1957.
Properties on the Derby blight list are fined $100 a day for each day on the list. The fines are meant to force property owners to deal with the problems.
