DERBY — Members of the Derby Board of Aldermen/Alderwomen are scheduled to meet 7 p.m. Tuesday to write Derby Charter questions that will be sent to voters for approval in November.

The elected officials, along with corporation counsel Vin Marino, will decide on the wording of the questions, along with how many will appear on the November ballot.

The meeting is scheduled to be held using the Zoom video conferencing platform. The information to attend the meeting is posted at the end of this post.

A charter is a blueprint for local government.

The City of Derby is considering making a number of changes to government, including making the terms of all elected officials in Derby four years instead of two.

In addition, the city wants to add specific language to its charter specifying the mayor’s position is full time. The city also wants to give the mayor a more formal role in the annual city budget process.

The recommendations have been discussed and endorsed by the Derby Charter Revision Commission, a bi-partisan, appointed panel, and; the Derby Board of Aldermen/Alderwomen.

However, voters get final say.

Some other possible charter changes:

  • Requiring people who run for office to be Derby residents
  • Designating the Board of Aldermen/Alderwomen as the superior body” in the city (there is occasionally debate over whether the Aldermen can tell the tax board what to do and vice versa)
  • Requires the mayor to submit a budget to the Board of Apportionment and Taxation (the tax board)
  • Changes the annual tax board deadline to adopt a budget to April 30
  • Gives the city the ability to post more notices on the city website and, if the state ever allows it, to publications other than printed newspapers
