DERBY — Louis Oliwa resigned from the city’s Board of Aldermen/Alderwomen Monday, according to a letter on file in the Town Clerk’s Office.
The first-term Alderman represented the city’s Third Ward.
He was charged with evading responsibility after allegedly striking a vehicle in a parking lot in Derby June 28 and not remaining on the scene. Oliwa was driving a Storm Ambulance chief’s vehicle at the time. He’s on administrative leave from the Storms.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge and is due in court Sept. 23.
Oliwa was subsequently charged with driving under the influence, court records show.
Oliwa ran on the Republican line when he was elected to the Board of Aldermen is 2016.
In his letter, he cites personal reasons for resigning and writes that he is “truly satisfied” with the progress the city is making.
A replacement is expected to be named at a meeting Wednesday.
Oliwa’s name was not submitted for re-election when the Republicans endorsed a slate last month. The GOP is running incumbents Jim DiMartino and Charles Sampson in the Third Ward, along with Rob Hyder, who was previously aligned with city Democrats.
