The Board of Aldermen will be discussing a revamped supernumerary program within the city’s police department tonight.
Last year the Aldermen, on the recommendation of the Derby Police Commission and Police Chief Gene Mascolo, voted to eliminate the program.
Supernumaries are part-time law enforcement personnel who have police powers but are not regular police department members.
Mascolo asked that the program be eliminated in 2008 because he didn’t have any work for the supernumeraries — and he worried about potential safety and liability problems using the program presented to the town.
The chief’s reasoning and the 2008 Board of Aldermen discussion can be found here.
The regular Board of Aldermen meeting starts immediately after a 7 p.m. public hearing.
The hearing is on an ordinance from Aldermen David Lenart regarding firefighter safety.

The meetings are at Derby City Hall at 1 Elizabeth St.
