Derby: All Pooped Out

The public will have its say next month on whether to ban dogs from the Derby Greenway.

Dog poop plopped on the trail is a constant problem. The Derby Board of Aldermen have tried to deal with the problem in a number of ways. There are stations along the trail offering ways to discard dog poop. They’ve placed temporary dog bans to deal with the poop.

It’s been raised at countless Derby Aldermen meetings. The Derby Police Department do not have the resources to go on poop patrol. The Derby Public Works Department says the loads get to be a bit much.

On Thursday, the Aldermen said they would write an ordinance banning dogs, circulate it, then ask for public comment in March.

The public hearing will most likely be held March 22.

Also, a proposal for a Derby dog park is in the works. Possible locations include O’Sullivan’s Island, which is near the Derby Greenway or a spot where Derby could team with Ansonia.

Ansonia recently opened its River Walk, which connects to Derby’s trail. Dogs are not allowed on Ansonia’s trail.

The possible Derby dog park matter was referred Thursday to a Derby Aldermen subcommittee for more research.
